Salary History Bans: The New Pay Equity Frontier
Event Navigation
Overview: Imagine you’re conducting a job interview. It’s going great, and you want to shift the conversation toward salary negotiations. Several things are running through your mind, like keeping the candidate excited about the role and staying within budget. So you hold your breath and ask the dreaded question: “How much are you currently being paid?”
Here’s the dilemma. If the candidate answers the question, they could risk anchoring their future compensation to their current salary—whether or not they’re being paid appropriately. Or if they refuse to answer, there’s a chance you may assume they make less than they actually do or even find them uncooperative.
The proposed solution? Ban the question altogether.
In an effort to promote pay equity for women and minorities, several states and cities have enacted laws that ban employers from asking job candidates for current and previous salary information. In the past, it was customary for employers to ask for salary history information during the hiring process and then use that information to set wages for positions. This practice has resulted in substantial pay inequality between men and women in the workplace. The intent of salary history bans is to rectify the widening pay gap.
Why you should attend: What is the impact on employers as a result of this legislation? What steps can employers take to remain compliant? What ARE employers allowed to ask regarding salary? How can employers avoid legal issues? These questions, and more, will be addressed during this informative webinar on Salary History Bans: The Next Pay Equity Frontier.
